Install: sudo apt install ./Clavis-linux.deb
Update by installing the newer .deb. Command line: /opt/clavis/bin/clavis-cli

Same vaults and the same .enc files on every system — encrypt on one, open on another.

On Windows you may see “Windows protected your PC” or “Unknown publisher.” That's normal for a new, independent app — nothing is wrong. Click More info then Run anyway. The portable ZIP behaves the same.
Verify your download — compare the SHA-256 checksum with the file you got. In PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\Clavis-Setup.exe · On Linux: sha256sum Clavis-linux.deb

Questions

Where are my files and vaults kept?

On your PC only. Encrypted files stay where you put them, and your vault settings live in your Windows user folder.

Can I encrypt straight from File Explorer?

Yes. Right-click a file or folder → Clavis → Encrypt, Decrypt or Verify; folders also offer Add to Watch Folder. On Windows 11, choose "Show more options" first. You can turn the menu off in Settings → Explorer.

Can I open an encrypted file without decrypting it?

Yes, with Clavis Pro: double-click the .enc file and it opens in its usual app without leaving a decrypted copy on your PC. Save your edits back into the encrypted file, or re-lock it when you are done. With Clavis Free, double-clicking offers to decrypt the file.

How do updates work?

Clavis checks once a day (or when you choose Settings → Updates → Check now). Updates are small, and you choose when the app restarts.

What if I forget my password?

Use the recovery key Clavis gave you when you created your vault — choose “Forgot password?” on the unlock screen.

Can I uninstall it?

Yes — from Windows Settings → Apps. Your encrypted files and vaults are left untouched, so keep Clavis (or reinstall it) to open them.

Does Clavis upload my files?

No. Everything happens on your computer. Clavis only goes online to check for updates.
